  • June21, 2008- FUN, SUN & JACK RUSSELLS

The VJRTC  had a very successful training day Saturday, June 21.  The weather was absolutely beautiful, with the rain holding off until all events had ended.

The day started with many participants practicing their terriers in racing.  Many new club members were given the opportunity to “race” their terriers for the very first time.  The following new members were in attendance - Barbara Hecht, Lois Kauffman and Bill White, Megan VanDen Elzen, Chet & Janie Atkins & children, Leslie and Fred Parrish.

Experienced members were on hand to provide advice and tips on racing if needed.  It was so fulfilling to watch new member’s  terriers “turn on” to what they love to do – chase a lure or do go-to-ground.   It was equally fulfilling to see the interaction between the owner and the terrier while having fun.

After racing, everyone moved to the go-to-ground area, where similar instruction and assistance was provided to those interested in go-to-ground.

After the go-to-ground exercise, everyone moved to the Hickey’s guest house, where tables had been set up outside under some magnificent old trees for a potluck. The food brought by everyone was absolutely delicious.  Everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves just sitting around “talking terriers” and getting to know everyone – especially the new members and guests.    We were very happy with the turnout – given the current gas situation.

Another event, the Puppy Evaluation Party, was conducted after the potluck.  This is where puppies are evaluated by experienced breeders.  These breeders discuss with the group in attendance conformation points about each of the puppies.  For those of you who have never attended one of these Puppy Parties, it is a very educational experience.

Many thanks to those Board and club members who pitched in to help to conduct the above events.

  • The following seminars are now available on DVD. See your VJRTC May-June newsletter for more information, or contact John Hickey at jmhcameraman@yahoo.com, or Darlene Irvine at oakrunjrt@earthlink.net. You may choose two of the seminars to be on one DVD.

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT

BAER TESTING NOW AVAILABLE

How exciting is this? We’ve been wishing for Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) testing availability, other than at Nationals, and now here it is. Dr. Charles Hickey, DVM, in Arvonia, VA, has purchased all the necessary equipment and is making the test available to all of us at extremely affordable rates.

For those of you who are not familiar with BAER testing, here is a description directly from the JRTCA website:  “This test records brain responses to click sounds delivered to an ear. It does not require a behavioral response from the animal, hence no chance of misinterpretation of a dog's response. The test can be done quickly (with the appropriate equipment), and will give a definitive record of each ear's response to sound. The BAER is currently being used to eliminate or reduce the incidence of genetic expression of deafness from several breeds of dogs (i.e., Dalmatians, English Setters). Since deafness is a genetic defect, and since it appears essentially at 2-3 weeks of age, testing the pup anytime after 5 weeks of age with the BAER has become an excellent way to identify the auditory status of individual dogs. This deafness trait has not been observed to develop gradually in dogs, and does seem to be an all-or-none situation for each ear.”

Dr. Hickey’s fees for BAER testing are as follows:

$25 per adult dog to VJRTC/JRTCA members.  There will be an additional fee if the dog needs sedation. The sedation fee will be based on age of dog and sedation needed.

$30 per adult dog to JRTCA members. There will be an additional fee if the dog needs sedated. The sedation fee will be based on age of dog and sedation needed.

$50 per adult dog for non-JRTCA members. There will be an additional fee if the dog needs sedated. The sedation fee will be based on age of dog and sedation needed.

$40 per puppy in a litter for non-JRTCA members.

$30 per puppy in a litter for JRTCA members.

$25 per puppy in a litter for VJRTC/JRTCA members.

Call Dr. Hickey for an appointment at 434-581-1979, 804-360-0100, or 804-745-3276; or email him at cwhdvm@yahoo.com.

Be a responsible breeder and/or pet owner -- take advantage of these phenomenal rates and get your puppies and your adults BAER tested.
